"Best Choreographer" -Star Tribune 2016 Best of Minnesota
This acclaimed Minneapolis-based contemporary Indian dance company premieres their newest work on the theme of “Work Women Do.”
Horidraa: Golden Healing explores how women in global communities of color activate hope and healing to sustain communities around the world.
Inspired by indigenous practices across different communities led by women, this original work of dance theater connects movement and text with spiritual practices that balance breath and energy cycles, cultural modes of interactive listening and offering support, and recipes with spices that heal from within.
The dominant metaphor for Horidraa is turmeric, the golden yellow root that has been part of the South and East Asian cuisine and medical systems for centuries. In India, women commonly grind turmeric to prepare meals. The natural dye from the root stains the hands a golden yellow. Similarly, the work of women, whose daily practices invigorate health and healing in subtle but substantial ways, touches and colors our lives beautifully.
This evening-length work features choreography by Ananya Chatterjea (named Best Choreographer by the StarTribune in its 2016 Best of Minnesota), directorial collaboration by Marcus Young, original sound and music by Greg Schutte and Queen Drea, set design by Alison Hiltner, costume design by Annie Cady, and lighting design by Kevin A. Jones.
